Pub of the Year 2007

The SW London CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2007 (i.e. the current Pub of the Year throughout 2008) is the Trafalgar <www.thetraf.com> in Merton. The Pub of the Year is voted for by members’ ballot and was announced at the Battersea Beer Festival on Thursday 7th February 2008. The Traf is only a ten minute walk from the Sultan so a visit to the top two pubs is easily possible in a single session.

The Trafalgar in Merton - Pub of the Year 2007 A five minute walk from South Wimbledon Underground Station this is a small, traditional local pub dating from the 1860s and adorned with Nelson memorabilia. It’s a free house serving Fuller’s Gales HSB and 4 or 5 changing guest beers, many coming from the microbreweries including Dark Star, and often including a mild.

Following this success in SW London, the Trafalgar was also voted the 2008 CAMRA Regional Pub of the Year for the whole of the Greater London area. See photo top right or click for more details. The Pub featured on the cover of the October/November 2008 edition of the London Drinker Magazine.

Our 2005 Pub of the Year winner is an old traditional, compact, community local, with a small patio leading to a delightful enclosed garden. Friendly and welcoming licensees look after the pub, the customers and the beers. Young’s Bitter and Special are always in excellent condition.

The ‘bird’ is like a country pub in London and easily the best in the Balham area. It is very well looked after by people who really care for their Young’s beers and also raises huge sums for charity with it’s famous annual walk. There is a family conservatory at the back and you are always assured of a warm welcome.

A five minute walk from the Trafalgar, a traditional local Young’s pub which has been run by the same couple, Terry and Debbie, for over 20 years. It is twinned with the Horse Brass pub in Portland, Oregon, whose customers presented the glasswork and the portrait in the bar.

A past SW London and Greater London CAMRA award winner, renowned for the quality of its Hop Back beers and others, is more of a village pub than back street boozer, with engaging bar staff and a warm and friendly atmosphere. It is a proper pub serving excellent ales, full of character with locals to match.

Our 2004 Pub of the Year winner is an oasis in a quiet square off Brixton’s main road which is superbly run and serves top quality Young’s beers. It is extremely popular with Town Hall staff and with those attending events at the nearby Brixton Academy, though locals are the mainstay customers.
